This specialized program offers in-depth training by experts in a peer learning environment for managers with over 5 years of experience.

Leaders with over 5 years of experience managing people are familiar with the issues that come with overseeing direct reports, working with other managers and upper management.  This peer-learning group, taught by experts, provides cutting edge solutions to old management challenges.  During the 5 week course, managers will discover proven methods and techniques that will hone their skills and immediately impact their work situation.

Session 1: Negotiation, Responding to Power Plays and Other Communication Tactics: Learn proven methods to navigate all situations.
Session includes:
  • The link between influence and leadership.
  • The nuts and bolts of using influence and managing relationships to accomplish strategic work.
  • The four negotiation skills and an eight-step process to respond to power plays.
  • The art of being persuasive using whole communication.
Session 2: Five Skills to Convert Strategic Thinking Into Action: Hone your managerial skills to see the “big picture” and develop strategy using creative, critical and systems thinking. Session includes:
  • The five skills to convert thinking into strategic action.
  • A model which emphasizes strategic intention, strategic alignment, multiple perspectives and action orientation.
  • Methods to successfully focus the talent and energy of individuals toward a clear and aligned intent.

Session 3: Reduce Organizational Stress to Improve Performance: Discover organizational best practices for developing an impassioned, engaged, motivated, high performing workforce with you as a leader.
Session includes:

  • Cutting edge solutions other organizations are leveraging to reinforce their culture.
  • Methods to maximize organizational performance.
  • Tips, techniques and the best language to use to inspire innovation.
  • Individual action plans for leadership growth that reinforces an authentic management environment of delegation, responsibility and accountability.
Session 4: Authentic and Genuine Ways to Improve Influence: Realize the value of creating and leveraging relationships to get work done.
Session includes:
  • Understanding the value of influence, credibility and relationship capital.
  • Maintaining positive and appreciative interpersonal relationships.
  • Leveraging relationships for results.
Session 5: Processing the Tough Issues: Learn how to best navigate tough management challenges with difficult people and multiple stakeholders.
Session includes:
  • A strategic approach for understanding employee motivation and working with constant change.
  • The practical value of coaching for performance enhancement.
  • Skills needed to avoid the traps of assumptions and judgments.
  • Methods to build trust among team members as you navigate and counter the pitfalls of team dynamics.

Who Should Attend
This program provides managers with five or more years of experience cutting edge solutions to old management challenges.  Managers will learn from experts and interact with their peers to address the tough issues that don’t seem to have easy answers.  In addition, participants will hone their management skills in consideration of possible promotions and if an executive director role is right for them.

Instructors:
SHERRI PETRO is a Senior Affiliated Consultant with Nonprofit Management Solutions and a Principal with VPI Consulting, a firm she joined in 2001. A strategic planning, leadership and marketing professional with more than 20 years experience, Sherri is an expert facilitator and public speaker, having lead over 100 seminars. She also distills her expertise as an executive coach, going one-on-one with executive directors, business owners and CEOs. She is the author of over 40 articles on strategy, marketing, and executive coaching.

LENORE LOWE is executive director of Nonprofit Management Solutions. She joined NMS as the Director of Training and Organizational Development in 2008 after nearly fifteen years as an NMS senior affiliated consultant. She has provided leadership, governance, and management consulting and training for the boards and staff of dozens of nonprofit organizations throughout California during her twenty-five year career in the sector. Lenore serves as principal on NMS consulting projects and is the instructor in the NMS Management Certificate Program offered in collaboration with Brandman (formerly Chapman) University. A native San Diegan, Lenore holds a Masters of Education from the University of San Diego and is an alumna of LEAD San Diego.
